Tide Water Oil Co. (I) Ltd. (TWOIL) has installed two Wind Turbine Generators of 1.5 MW each in Radhapuram Taluk, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India. Both the wind turbine generators have been commissioned on 17th March, 2010. This project activity uses wind turbine technology which taps an inexhaustible source of energy which is clean. The spinning of this generator produces the required electricity. The technology is environmentally safe and sound which does not lead to any greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The project site is from the selected list of sites mapped by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) for wind farms. The electricity generated from the project activity will be sold to the state grid of Tamil Nadu which comes under the Southern grid of India. The project activity contributes to the sustainable development of the region and satisfies the four pillars of sustainable development in the following ways:

Economic well being

  • The project activity has generated additional employment opportunities, directly and indirectly, for the local community during the installation and operation of the WTGs. The investment for the project activity has increased the economic activity of the local area.
  • The project’s initial investment was about INR 180 million and in addition to this there will be continuous inflow of funds to the project considering CDM revenues as well.
  • It will promote industrial growth by catering to the energy needs arising out of the supply demand gap of electricity prevalent in the Southern Grid.

Social well being

  • This Project activity involves the use of renewable energy (wind). This adds to the energy security of the region.
  • This project activity has promoted infrastructural development like roads in the areas around the project activity.
  • The project activity has generated employment opportunity for local residents. Economic well being contributes to social well being.

Environmental well being

  • The identified project activity involves generation of power from wind. This has long term benefits related to climate change given that the alternative in India is typically a fossil fuel based generation system. CO2 abatement and reduction of GHG emission by replacing fossil fuel based electricity with wind power based electricity generation will help in reducing climate change risk and will provide a less polluting source of energy locally.

  • This project activity supports the required R&D activities to promote better wind turbine design for higher efficiency.
